Samurai swords are chronicles of how Japan has evolved and are believed to date back as far as 4500 BC. Let’s see how samurai swords unfold to become the swords they are today through the four periods in Japanese history.
- Ancient Sword (Chokuto or Ken) Period - until A.D. 900
The Ancient Sword (Chokuto or Ken) or period of antiquity is the time before 900 AD. Swords in this period were made chiefly by smiths in China or Korea or by the early Japanese smiths. The tempering was faulty although they were made of steel. It is common to find most swords of the straight (Chokuto) type. Locations in Japan primarily as centers of the sword making profession were in Yamato, Mutsu and San-in. They maybe manufactured in Japan yet are mere imitation of Chinese blades. During this period, many high-ranking officers carry expensive swords imported from China. Models made from an imitated Chinese sword were gradually developed into typical swords. The first Samurai swords were so thin which bends upon holding them parallel to the ground.
The Japanese Chokuto Sword
Chokuto Sword (or Chukandomowas) were straight and single-edged, although sometimes partially double. The Chokuto Sword is a copy of a sword that was originally brought into Japan from China and Korea during the 4th and 5th centuries.
The Chokuto Sword was developed before differential tempering technology evolved. They were made with a hira-zukuri or kiriha-zukuri tsukurikomi blade style.
The Chokuto was hardly used in battle due to the fact that is was shown to be less effective against other swords which were lighter and had curved blades. Over time, the Chokuto came to be used as a temple offering sword.Similar with the katana, just not curved but straight. Found before the Heian era before the Japanese found the sword arch technique (which was a unique way.)
Because the straight sword is difficult to use and rarely used in combat. After the discovery of the katana, chokuto still produced but mostly serves as a ceremonial sword.

The sword is used to divide and horse cavalry. In the manga series Samurai deeper Kyo, he used the sword of this type. Although it was not suitable for close combat. The making of this sword are included in the category of difficult, so the sword is a rare sword.

The nagamaki is nagamasaki is a long sword with the sword and the handle of the same. Included in the category of dagger, used for sudden attacks. Use of this sword is not as efficient as Tanto. The naginata is a spear with the blade katana. Used virago medium range combat. The handle is made of wood and curved katana lance eye. It is suitable for the type of fighting Chaos.
The actual ninja sword looked just like the samurai's daito or katana, but with a few small exceptions. For one, they were usually of a much poorer quality. To a samurai, his sword was his life. To the ninja, it was an important weapon, but not so important that it couldn't be replaced if broken or lost.
There is some conflict in history as to whether ninja were formidable swordsmen. This is because there were so many different clans and groups of ninja, it is quite possible that some were well trained in the art of the sword and others were not. Since the ninja were warriors and soldiers alongside the samurai, in everyday life they had to appear as a normal soldier. Having a sword of a unique or special design would identify him as a ninja. This would cause problems, because ninja were always suspect!
Though a samurai would never use this weapon, this is the perfered sword of ninja/shinobi. Unlike most swords, it does not have the usual curved blade, instead going for the straight blade, which tends to lend to a more severe stabbing tip. The ninja-to blade is between 17" and 23", just slightly longer then a wakizashi. This is the only viable ninja weapon available in Dagorhir, as most other tools of ninja are unusable with Dagorhir rules (such as chain weapons for good reason).
Yari is a spear type. Unlike the naginata (Naginata is a spear with the blade katana), the eyes of the spear is made straight. Straight form is effective to use stab enemies that come from the front. Usually used for men mengahadang rate enemy troops. This weapon diapakai By Madarame Ikaku the manga series Bleach.
Yari is believed that the Yari originated from the Traditional Chinese spear. However, the Yari did not become popular until the Mongol invasion. Previous to this event, fighting in Japan was very formalized and more like duels than battles. However, the invasion of the Mongols changed this style of warfare
